I’m training for a half marathon in May. Where I live is SUPER cold right now so tons of treadmill runs. Phily’s videos NEVER FAIL at making me feel inspired to go quicker or 1-2 miles longer!! Always motivated watching these videos! Thank you Phily and Daniel 😇

Same! I live in NE USA and am running the Vermont City Marathon 2-man relay May 25th, so 1/2 marathon each runner and it will be my first. This cold snowy weather has made training awful.

Mental game is big, I learned it already in my previous sport (bouldering). I had 2 tricks and they both worked miraculously well for this specific sport:
    - for one max effort movement you need to somehow artificially become angry, it's very hard to do (how do you get angry on purpose for just one movement?) but possible, it's similar for max deadlifts and it helps increasing amount of muscle fibers that you use, and it's specificall for one super hard movement at your limit,
    - for climbing comp you want to be relaxed, think about having fun and giving your best during the climbs, you always think about current movement, not about next "route". If you don't do this you will most probably have many muscle fibers activated when you don't need them. Basically the goal is to not expand energy with muscles that you don't need. And also to remember about breathing.
For running I have other tricks, but I always try to stay positive:
    - running in snow/mud? "It will be so amazing when in 1 month I'll be able to run on dry pavement and I will feel that friction under my shoe",
    - I feel tired right at the start of 2 hour long run? "I will feel exactly the same or even worse during the ultramarathon, this training is going to prepare my brain super well to the actual race day",
    - It's hot? I would go out in the middle of day in 40 degrees. It would be hard. But I would say to myself "my mid summer race will be managable if I acclimatise myself like that",
    - I have hard long 30 minute cycling intervals. It's really painful. I tell to myself "this one training session is worth more than 5 next sessions so I need to stay focused and finish it, this training is saving me a lot of training time, this is the most important session",
    - It's cold and windy and snowing and blizzard and idk what else apocalypse maybe "oh cool, some new experience, let's see how my body reacts" or "oh cool, rain, I can finally test my running rain jacket",
    - someone is overtaking me during an ulta race, the body automatically tries to adjust to that person's speed (if their speed difference is not huge), I'm prepared for this. I always actively think "dude you have 60 more kilometers to go, don't accelerate, go with your trained pace, each small acceleration would cost you later", this is the very important one for me because I'm training for ultra runs and ultra triathlons and consistent pacing at specific level of intensity is the key to surivive such race with good result. You can of course yolo the first 5 hours and then be dead for the rest of the race, but you'll lose a lot of time, your result will be worse and at the same time you'll get more suffering. More suffering for worse result is not worth it so I needed to program this one into my brain and think about it and it really helped me avoiding bonks because I avoid zeroing my glycogen this way,
    - When people overtake me in unreasonable way I sometimes also think "ok one more guy that will bonk, thank you for giving me 1 position for free",
    - Unlucky situation during a race, I need to you know, get rid of my breakfast, one could think "o no I will lose time" but I would think "at least I'll have short pause". Hehe.
    - For days when I feel weaker I base my thoughts on my experiences. Training endurance sports I noticed that often if I feel super tired, staying home will make me more tired, and if I keep running every day, a few days later I feel stronger (weird because in theory I just ran many kilometers in last 6 days but I feel more recovered lol). Recently I was doing a tempo session. According to my planning I needed a 10km tempo run, but my legs were very heavy that day. But before I even left home I already had "minimum plan" and "intended plan". My minimum plan was 6km, my intended was 10. Then doing circles on track I was just waiting for 6th kilometer with thought "I will decide then if I still have energy to continue". After 6km I reach it and my next goal is 8km. I again only focus on reaching 8km, at 8km I'll decide if it's worth continuing. And this way I managed to do the whole 10km run even though my body that day was weirdly weak and of course it quickly resulted in nice body adaptation a few days later. I learned that also in ultra: giving yourself minimum goal which is less intimidating, and then extending it is a good way to handle worse days. And of course I always extend to intended plan, except that one time when I figured out my body was not ready for my planned session (bad planning on my side, stupid mistake) so I finished on my minimum goal and ran back home. :)
    - of course for ultra if I already have enough of food I tell myself "just eat slowly, you'll feel terrible if you don't, it's worth it" but I still need to work on that one tbh, I don't have any cool mental strategy for eating after 10+ hours of effort,
    - and one of the biggest struggles for me: long easy easy runs (and by easy easy I mean super low HR not even close to "mixed mode", as aerobic as it gets) I also need to tell myself "man don't accelerate, I know it's fun but it will be more fun to use that energy tomorrow during track training". Because of my past sports I really love mixed energy system runs (so for example tempo runs) so I need to have mind tricks to go slowly on easy runs.
    - and the most basic one that I tell myself the most often during hard sessions: "What a struggle, my next race will feel so nice and easy after what I'm doing right now, let's goooooo".
So basically I am searching for positives in every situation and logical explanations why I'm doing something. :) Nice video btw.

I JUST ran a 1:38 half last Sunday at Vegas, which broke my old PB by 9 minutes, so really enjoyed your "Steve" example. I went out a bit fast, only planned on 1:40 and was averaging 7:30/mi for the first 5K but I ended up holding onto the pace the whole time and even-splitting.

Phily B! I like the energy in this video. The grind is real and the grind is what matters. These videos are so helpful for all of us amateurs/weekend warriors. As a former fast college runner who’s NOT that anymore, another fair nugget of wisdom I’ve learned the hard way is to NOT compare yourself to the “yourself of old” thank you for helping me on my journey back to fitness. From 245lbs 13 months ago to 185lbs today and a 1:32 Half Marathon in the books. I had to find new appreciation for my accomplishments. My PB is 76 min in the Half Marathon but that was 15 years ago. It’s okay to those out there to rediscover the love for the grind and the love for running. It’s hard but worth it. I’m training for the Chattanooga full IronMan triathlon September this year but before that I’m on pace for my first sub 80 min half marathon in 15 years in May in Pittsburgh. Thanks for the added motivation Phily you’re awesome. Keep Loving the grind 💪🏼!

I think the half is underrated! Everyone wants to know if you've run a marathon, but a fast half is just as impressive and the training might be more fun. I've just started training for one to take a break from the slog of spring marathon long runs in the snow.

I attempted my first half marathon nearly three years ago with a goal time of sub-2 hours. I had no idea how many calories (and carbs) I was burning in training and severely under fueled, especially on long run and workout days, so needless to say, I did not achieve that goal. I nearly injured myself on my second attempt that year and decided to wait another year before really going after my goal again. I still hadn't figured out how much of a calorie, carb, and protein deficit I was living in, so attempt three ended as the absolutely worse race of my life, physically and mentally. As a result, I barely ran for a month after that third attempt because I had poured so much into my training and gotten significantly less out of my race. Long story short, after that race, I worked with a registered dietitian and, after more than a year, have finally started to see consistent progress in my training. While I haven't reached this goal, my paces indicate that whenever I decide to go after this goal again, I'll smash it! (A 2 hour HM is 9:09 min/mi pace and I can do 90 minute long runs at ~9:30 min/mi pace with my HR mid zone 2, so I'm still feeling good at the end.)

Perfect timing Phily...and I love that you're a mile girl! 😁My half marathon is April 5th in upstate NY so hopefully it'll be above freezing by then, yikes it is frigid here! Been training mostly on the TM and as I've been catching up your past vids (just discovered your channel a couple of months ago--I'm a triathlete, forgive me, lol), I recently found the one that went through your key Half training sessions. I've already used several--such motivation to hit another PB! My last attempt at it a few years back was fraught with gastrointestinal peril and what should have been a 4-5 min. record turned out to be a fight simply to finish it. By mile 11 I was so ready to be DONE and get cleaned up that I turned my brain off and just took off. Ended up PBing by about 15 seconds! I agree w/the others--Daniel's editing is wonderfully fun. 🙌 A vid I caught up on the other day included Anakin's "IT'S WORKING!!"--that was the bomb! 💥 I'm waiting for him to use my fav quote from LOTR...any guesses? 🤣Sorry for all the rambling; it's what I do best.💪 God bless the journey, Megan 🙏 ps. Oops forgot to include my goal time. A PR would be sub 1:53:00 but my big goal is sub 1:50:00. Not wicked fast but I'm probably old enough to be your mother. 😇

I've definitely beaten myself in a few races either getting in my own head or not trusting my rather excellent coach's advice!
The pacing strat absolutely works - chilling in the middle at that comfortably tough pace definitely leaves something for the end.

What a time for this video to come out. I was doing a 3hr long run while fasting and from mile 4 my body was telling me to stop, started telling myself "Stopping is only going to prolong the suffering. The sooner you get back, the sooner you can break your fast." Then I would tell myself "Logic" based on my previous statement and it carried me to 40km.

Hey phily thanks for another great video. I just ran my first sub 2 hour half at Brighton on Sunday with only 10 seconds to spare! Next I'm running the london landmarks half in 5 weeks and hoping to go under 1:48. I'm sooooooooo frickin' excited!!!!!!!

Your first point. You just reminded me, one of the best races ever ran, the only thing I recall going through my mind was...and I quote: "WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE this is fun!" I paid no attention to my pace, just randomly picking people off in front of me, and I set a PR. That same race, The Shamrock Shuffle 8K to kick off the Chicago race season is in a few weeks. Thanks for the reminder Phily! 😄

Thank you for the great video. I ran my first half marathon in October 2024 with a time of 1:54:27. On April 19th, 2025, I’ll be running another half marathon, and my goal is to go sub 1:50:00. I’m confident I can achieve it. It’s also part of my training for September, where I’ll be running my first marathon in Berlin.
After successfully completing the half marathon, I have to admit that the marathon scares me. I’m trying to counter this fear by consistently increasing my weekly mileage. I’m also incorporating intervals, speed runs, easy runs, and long runs. Since this year, I’ve been trying strength workouts at the gym as well.
Thank you for the inspiration, and love the grind!

Thank you Phily!! I am training for a HM and just under 3 weeks out I had a crush accident and soft tissue injury on my right foot… so training has completely halted this week. 4 days and counting. I wanted a 1h45m but now I’d just like to equal my PB from my first HM of 1h53m!
I delayed watching this because I thought it would make me too sad given the injury, but even the first point has really helped. I have so much delulu self belief for this HM, I’m convinced I will heal and be back to running in time and smash the race, even though I can’t walk 😂

love that you mentioned training top end speed and even put a percentage to it (95%)...100s & 200s above 90% effort and doing them as repeats with adequate rest is really important for training power and adding strength & integrity to your form/technique

I’ve got a friend who was aiming for sub 3 marathon in Valencia, paced himself perfectly and finished at 3:01. Because his gps was 42.6. Maybe it’s not such a big deal for a half, but for a full marathon, especially when it’s a big crowded field, where it’s hard to follow that line, it makes sense to add a little in the middle. That one-two minutes might not have that much impact but will give a bit more confidence. And checking yourself with a route markers. Because at the end of a super long race you might not be able to full sprint and catch everything

You are so wonderful Philly! Thanks for all your amazing energy and very helpful tips and tricks 🙏 I’m personally doing my first marathon very soon, and it’s frightening as F***! 16th March at Barcelona marathon. My “running career” has until now only been around 20 months, but I feel ready! I was hoping to be able to tackle the 4 hour barrier in my first go at the full hog.. but unfortunately training hasn’t been all smooth sailing, and I’ve had some injuries like groin pain and some tendinitis in my big toe. It’s getting better, but I haven’t been able to push as much as I would have hoped for, so the goal has been pushed down to the 5 hour mark instead. I absolutely love your first point, in the mental fitness, cause I also feel there is a lot of scope for improvements there, which is also massively fascinating for a relatively new runner. I’ll use as much of your advices as I can, and looking forward to learn more from you in the future. Thanks for great content and wonderful vibes 🙌✨ Wish you all the best for you training towards London! 💪🔥🇬🇧

Enjoyed this video. I am 58 years old. I hate running lol. So back in the end of November, I got this crazy idea that I wanted to train for a half marathon. I had only run one previous 5K in my life and that was 25 years ago. I was planning to run a half at the first of March. But I had some setbacks with pulling groin and hip flexors because I found myself trying to do too much to get prepared. This has been a learning process for sure. Mentally and physically. I am still training and looking at possibly doing a half at the end of April. My farthest long run was last Monday being 8 miles. It took me 1 hour and 35 min. Yes, I'm slow. But for me this is about wanting to finish the race without stopping. Not about speed but I don't want to be the slowest turtle out there either. I was always an athlete but never a runner. When I got to the end of my 8 miles, I couldn't help but think I would have to run another hour if I was doing my half that day. There is no way I could have run another hour because of the way I was feeling. Hip flexors and groins were feeling wonky lol. But I made it. Just my little journey I wanted to share. I hope I will be ready by race day. I going to give it all I got to be ready. And if not, then perhaps I will push my attempt into May or June.
