PLAYER OF THE MATCH
Graeme Hick (ENG)
*Rain interrupted play before the last ball of the 43rd over. South Africa then required 22 runs off 13 balls for victory. With 2 overs lost due to rain, the target was reduced to 21 runs from only 1 ball, using the Most Productive Overs method.
It's been close to three decades since the 1992 World Cup heartbreak in Sydney for South Africa. The Proteas had an abruptly tragic end imposed on them against England, who in all probability would’ve won the contentious World Cup semi-final match. But, it led to one of the most unusual exits in international cricket.
During the course of the 1992 World Cup tournament, South Africans had performed impressively to reach the semi-final stage. Earlier in the match, batting first, England set a big target of 252/6, despite South Africa’s best bowling efforts, with the help of Greame Hick’s 83 and Dermot Reeves’ splendid 25 off 14 balls.
In reply, South Africa chased well and needed just 22 runs off 13 balls to beat England at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) when rain played spoil sport. They were trailing at 231/6 after 42.5 overs, when it rained. Two overs were deducted after the rain induced interval and once play resumed, South Africa's target remained the same but from two overs. But due to the archaic rain rule, they were rendered helpless against a target of 22 from a single ball. The daunting rule not only crashed all their hopes for a spot in the 1992 final fixture, but it also dashed all their campaign, searching for its first World Cup title.
Many blame their dramatic crash out slow over rate and lowest scoring over rain rules among others for their debacle. However, they were rendered helpless against a target of 22 from a single ball. It was another case of so near yet so far for the South Africans.
While on the other hand, the much-ridiculed rain rule was not enforced when the match had started with a ten-minute rain delay. England were not slapped with a reduction of overs as it was decided by the game’s mandarins that the interval would be delayed to 6.10 PM (from 6 PM) and would be shortened by ten minutes. Hence, there would be no reduction in the number of overs otherwise.
Such tense moments brought a reanalysis of the contentious rain rule, which was eventually replaced by the Duckworth-Lewis (now Duckworth-Lewis-Stern) method.

@@ddawg415 Yeah.....Kind of....They beat Afghanistan in the semi in the 2024 T20 and lost the final....Beating Afghanistan in a t20 semi, I don't think is necessarily enough to end the curse. People will differ on that I suppose.
The end of this match was an absolute farce, almost as bad as the underarm incident, shame on the icc!
Good that eng lost. They didn’t deserve to win in finals
Rain saved Pakistan in leage match against England otherwise english champions in 1992 too.
@@D.ThirumalaikumarKumar can’t consider their sf win due to stupid rule. We cannot say for sure if they would have won
@@D.ThirumalaikumarKumar same for South Africa rain saved them in group match against pakistan
@@mobohra bro pakistan was all out for mere 75 runs in that match England would have surely won it
My childhood memories
The most fatal in the history of cricket shame on star sports channel they have made this thing
@@santanukabiratna7237true that star sport should give some extra time for two over but they already told at starting that match should be finished at certain time like other media broadcast. I think that this match should be less over means 40 over due to already rain forecasted between the match and time deadline for complete over match.
@@isisunayak Considering it was a semi final, they should have made better use of the reserve day perhaps - I'm thinking of the NZ v India semi final of 2019.
@@JimChap reserve day of final between sri Lanka and Australia is not used at 2007
I still don't see why South Africans are so butthurt about this match. Even without the rain, they would never have won.
Nice South Africa Group.❤

SA 🥺🥺🥺😡😡
tears on Allan Donald eyes
Years later I still can't believe this occurred. How was this MPO method ever thought up as a good idea?

yep, just logically it doesn't make sense
English fan hugging his mate at the end is cut from the same cloth as the English fans who were cheering in the last over of the 2019 final when Stokes got the deflection off his bat that went for 4.....He should have been humble. No honour, no testicles either. I wouldn't celebrate that win openly.
At last, South Africa broke the Semi-final knock out history in 2024 T20 World cup Semi-final against Afghanistan.
32 years is an very large period.
Hope, South Africa wins 2026 T20 World cup since South Africa has already broken the demon possessed Knock out Game in ICC tournament.

@@sumanmajumdar7884 Again south africa got robbed by icc against india
Please tell how reset the target if over is reduced due to rain because only duck worth Lewis method is available till now.
They didn’t use the DL method here. They created the DL method AFTER this.
Soth Africa win this much ,,England lose this same final..God by ICC, shame on you,,,
Why they can't have had discretion after the rain at the end and left the chase unaltered is just foolishness. The occasion and the sport deserved better than a farcical finish and a little discretion there surely should have been exercised - only a dipshit would say it was unfair on England to leave the chase unaltered at that point.
India should erect Roof Top in Kolkatta, Hyderabad & Bangalore Stadium like Wimbledon Roof top

The controversial rain rule that had been used in many matches in this world cup was also known as "low scoring over rule" method .
The scoreboard which had showed 22 runs required was actually slightly incorrect . It should have showed 21 runs off 1 ball . The calculations done at that time failed to account for one over during the English innings in which only one Bye run was scored .
