Do you know of shows that wasted/ruined their great potential or, conversely, managed to create something impressive and different despite a very simple and seemingly weak premise? If so, which cases impressed or upset you the most?

Isekai de Mofumofu Nadenade suru Tame ni Ganbattemasu. from this season. All those random battles and politics partially ruined the show.

Animegataris: could have been a good commentary on creation side vs the fan end up wtf that was.

Joshikousei: wholesome show with nobody saying a single word.

Puraore! Pride of Orange: proved that CGDCT with sports it's a winning combination bonus was set in the national sport from my country.

Hmmmm the one which potential wasted, but it was little annoying but still enjoyable:

Darling in the Fraxx, with the "plot twist" and the whole mood and the show direction went into some universal bs... , before that it was quite a nice and interesting show

Something which had big potential and could be nice but was from the beginning being made in terrible manner so it is just a huge dissapointment:

Attack on Titan, Good world building, starts of amazing until the protag suddenly turns 1 dimensional edgy and badly written fight scenes follow.

Mushoku Tensei (S1 Pt 1)Introduced Eris, makes me want to strangle her neck and also changes the plot in ways I disapprove

One punch man, definitely falls under the “weak premise” label or so do I think, but it turned out to be a straight up masterpiece

Hajimete no Gal. They managed to sort the bad and ugly materials at hands into an organically conceived source of entertainment.

Wasted potencial/Disapointments: Rise of The Shield Hero, Bushoku no Berserk, Kingdom of Ruin, Dead Mount Death Play, The Misfit of Demon King Academy, Megalo Box, Assassination Classroom, Shaman King Remake, High Card, Got a Cheat Skill in Another World and Became Unrivaled in The Real World, Nanatsu, Psycho Pass after season 2-3, Soul Eater, Tokyo Ghoul S2+, The Promised Neverland S2.

The ones that surprised me/turns out were way better than 1st look: The Promised Neverland S1, Tokyo Ghoul S1, Psycho Pass S1, Hajime no Ippo, Blue Lock, Mob Psycho 100, Parasyte, Dororo, Another, Erased, Sousou no Frieren, Dark Gathering and it isn't an anime but I will throw in YuYu Hakusho live action too.

Edit: Almost forgot Deca-Dence on the surprise list... The plot twist from ep 1 to ep 2 is just insane.

Shugo Chara's anime was a case of a bit of both. The anime was really good at poking fun at itself and despite its extremely weak premise, had a lot of worthwhile moments, good comedy, interesting character developments, and memorable moments. On the other hand, the plot had a lot of potential that went primarily untapped, and after the first season, it took one of the biggest nosedives that I've ever seen in ANY anime. And it never really recovered from that.

Full explanation: (for the third season, which is when things got REALLY bad)

I would say the most wasted use of potential would have to be Spy X Family. This premise has it all, charming characters, whimsical humor and fun, engaging action, amazing soundtrack, great and energetic style, rich themes around family, duty, secrets, war and so much more, amazing drama and character arcs, tension and emotionally cathartic story of a man learning how to live. This story could easily be in my top 10, hell my top 3. But it's wasted because the story never moves and it never has any tension in the mission. They never push the boundaries of the dynamics of the characters or have them grow at a reasonable pace. As it is, it's fun, but not much else.

86 has an interesting premise and themes, backed by nice visuals and sound, but the characters ruined it for me.

High Card S2 is the most recent example I can think of. Intriguing card system and geopolitical world from the get-go but the forced sympathy for the characters, cliche exposition and multiple inconsistencies with its storytelling drive me to the brink of insanity.

Re:Creators premise of famous anime/manga characters coming into the real world seems fun. But instead of being a wacky comedy and using parodies of well known characters... instead it took itself way too seriously and most of the characters were not even remotely familiar. Except for the mecha pilot who cried and whined a lot. It was obvious who he was supposed to be.

Saint Seiya: Saintia Shou. Great source material, huge potential, famous franchise with a huge fanbase... and yet, the anime adaptation was powerfully underwhelming. It didn't give justice to the manga. Not at all. It wasn't even good as a promotional anime.

The Kingdoms Of Ruin. I was so excited to finally get another edge lord revenge fantasy story, but I was met with nothing but disappointment. It was such a good concept for a show. It just consistently made horrible storytelling choices every chance it got

To some, Isekai Shokudou has a simple premise and it's arguably a 'one trick pony.' But despite this, the show is effective at creating alluring world building from a collection of short stories from the perspectives of various denizens of a fantasy world. If you like isekai and/or culinary stuff, or are just hungry, the show's atmosphere and tone is somewhat impressive. It's not a masterpiece, but imo it's pretty effective at what it does.

A show that's also relatively impressive, but even more surprising at how 'impressive' it is, is "Butareba -The Story of a Man Who Turned into a Pig-". I don't even like pigs, but as an isekai, this show stands out at being an effective isekai. Where the 'isekai' element is always relevant for both the MC and the viewer. There is a mystery to the show that, by the end isn't super amazing, but it's nonetheless intriguing for a show that seems like 'isekai trash.'

(Also, it's kinda like the opposite of SAO. The MC's voice actor is the same one for Kirito, but the MC he voices here is pathetically weak, and there's practically no harem. This show is simply an anti-power fantasy. Unless you actually consider it to be a power fantasy of sorts...)

After some thought about this question I think I've came to the conclusion that Kakegurui is the anime that mostly surprised me with its premise and idea. I'm not really a gambling extraordinaire nor do I promote gambling in basically any fashion. However something about the show just hit all the right buttons for me. Character design, music, atmosphere, drama. All of it came together real nicely in an easily enjoyed package. I remember watching the anime originally not expecting much from it at all and later realizing it's one of my favorite anime I'd ever seen. I guess some things are best enjoyed in fantasy lol

As for potential wasted I don't really have a strong answer to this at the moment. I try to not be negative about any content that I watch. Obviously some anime are just not great and hard to get through but overall I find it hard to pinpoint a specific anime that I felt was a complete waste of potential. Most anime I feel I can identify where it's headed and if I like it or not is completely up to my mood at that moment.

One recent title that comes to mind is "Reincarnated as a Sword". While at it's core and on it's surface it would seem just like any seasonal Isekai throw away with a ridiculous premise about a guy getting reincarnated as a sword, I oddly found watching it to be extremely entertaining. I had an extremely low expectation when I got around to watching this Anime. Though I liked it enough to buy it last year when Sentai Filmworks finally released it on Blu-ray.

While it's definitely not even close to being one of the best things I have ever consumed in my life, I found the main characters extremely likable in "Reincarnated as a Sword" which was one of the main appeals for me to keep watching. The whole father daughter relationship thing going on I guess really pulled me in as well between a talking sword and a cute cat girl child. While most might not find something like that an extreme appeal, I found it quite refreshing because it's something that is uncommon specifically in Isekai Anime. "Reincarnated as a Sword" managed to give me an Isekai power fantasy without some self insert teenage Boy as a protagonist and absent of a typical waifu Harem of moe themed cute girls fawning over the protag simply for existing.

nice question! gotta say the most disapointing thats comes to mind is wonder egg priority. dont wanna spiol but the Show was geering up to be a modern day madoka magica. it did not follow through. first 6 episodes are SPECTACULAR. everything that follows is a husk of what the first half established. totally let me down as a viewer..

I can say the same thing for Flip Flappers. It built up a really good, thought provoking world and vered off into scifi oscurity in the later half. at least flip flappers got a proper end, though convaluted.

now for the impressive! homestly most kyoani shows. they can turn the most mundane school life/romance light novel into an immersive viewing experiemce and im here for it.

another suprise would have to be the bloom into you anime. I love yuri manga but theres not a whole lot of yuri anime I enjoy. the bloom into you anime really focused on creating the atmosphere for the characters to exist in. the art is mostly consistent and the effects used to create a scene shows potential.

Some of the biggest disappointments I can remember off the top of my head were Takt Op. Destiny, Assassin's Pride, Magical Destroyers, and more recently Kingdom of Ruin. Magical Destroyers and Takt were both game advertisements, but they were fairly interesting until the final episodes, where everything gets messy because they have to set up the game.

The ending for Magical Destroyers just ruined the anime as a whole, as nothing before it even mattered anymore. Kingdom of Ruin had a good, interesting first few episodes, but quickly became tiresome as decisions didn't make sense, and things mellowed out very quickly (I didn't finish this though, so maybe things got better). Assassin's Pride was really fun to watch, but it simply moved too fast. Had it been slightly slower, it could have been better.

On the flip side, however, something that surprised me was Extreme Hearts. It's a sports idol anime, and it looks very uninspired at a glance. However, while not being anything to write home about, the characters are endearing, they struggle, and watching their work pay off feels good. The idol performances look really good in my opinion, as if they came from a different anime. It's not different nor groundbreaking, but I was surprised that they managed to mesh sports and idols halfway decently and that I was able to enjoy it, especially since I'm not fond of neither sports nor idol anime.

JJK. I have been watching the DVD leaks of Sukuna vs Mahoraga, and I can't help but shake my head at the absent mindedness of MAPPA. JJK 0 had no place being a movie. Shibuya arc should have been the movie.

Sukuna vs Mahoraga should have been considered one of, if not, the best fight in anime history, had it been in a movie. Instead 2 people bought the DVDs, and now the true look, style, and intensity of that scene is now just a clip on youtube. Whoever is in charge of mapping out the foundation of JJK's storyline and its presentation to the fans, should be fired. Hire me, a braindead fan, who has at least some sense, not to rob the fans, animators, and team involved with JJK. What a joke.

Surprises:
Dennou Coil: The consistency of the concept execution impressed me quite a lot.
Kamichu: It was simple and grounded but self-aware. The story consistently maintained itself without attempting something that I knew it couldn't pull.

Disappointments:
Death Parade, Summer Ghost, and Erased: They all had some interesting and seemingly delicate themes but overall all of them remained inconclusive.

I literally just finished season 2 of Beastars and can't stop thinking about how the story went so off the rails when the concept first introduced was so compelling and interesting already. Then again, I HAAAAAATE the mafia trope, so that's probably why I'm thinking this way.

About the anime that impressed me despite a simple or apparently uninteresting premise:
Haikyuu!!
Azumanga Daioh
Gin no Saji
Shoujo Shuumatsu Ryokou
Tanoshii Muumin Ikka
Haibane Renmei
Jujutsu Kaisen

And the anime that disappointed me because of a wasted potential:
Hi no Tori
Mouryou no Hako
Narutaru
Wonder Egg Priority
Basilisk
Seishun Buta Yarou wa Bunny Girl Senpai no Yume wo Minai

MOKUSHI KUSHIMO SHIMOKU KUMOSHI MOSHIKU SHIKUMO.

simple on the surface, but actually masterpieces

  • chainsaw man - it looked like your average gory teenage-boy-bait at first.... nah. fucking masterpiece. literally everyone has seen at least the anime (i heavily encourage anime-onlys to catch up on the manga if you're able) so i don't think i really need to say much about this one.
  • little witch academia - studio trigger's most underrated gem by far. deserves so much more hype. simplistic premise that honestly gets kind of dark. pretty family-friendly (kids won't pick up on the more tragic themes) with excellent animation and colors.

interesting premise that completely wasted its potential

  • oshi no ko - i heard such good things about this story at first, and the animation looked insane. my thought process was basically, "YOASOBI made a song for this, so it must be good, right?" hell no. disaster of a glorified soap opera with incestous undertones and multiple uncomfortable minor-adult relationships.
  • the promised neverland (S2) - as a manga reader, i will never forgive this. cut out my favorite (and very important) arc, half the characters are missing, the plot is completely butchered, and they changed the damn ending. also, shitty CG. S1 is a great adaptation of the manga, but i see S2 as completely anime-original at this point.
